Baby walkers – information for AliExpress to disseminate to suppliers

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has checked AliExpress’s website and believes that some suppliers may be selling baby walkers to Australian consumers that do not meet Australia’s product safety laws.

It is illegal to supply baby walkers in Australia or to people in Australia unless they comply with the relevant mandatory standard.

The mandatory standard covers baby walkers that comprise of a frame on wheels. Baby walkers are designed to support, inside the frame, a child with its feet touching the ground and who has not yet learned to walk and is propelled by the movement of a child.

The mandatory standard for baby walkers includes key safety features to avoid children being seriously injured through fall injuries. This includes various safety markings, plus design, construction and performance requirements. The Consumer Protection Notice sets out the full requirements of the mandatory standard.

Key mandatory requirements for baby and nursery products including baby walkers are listed in the Baby and nursery products fact sheet, which is available in various languages.

What action should suppliers take?

You have been identified as a potential seller of baby walkers. You should check that your product complies with the relevant mandatory standard. If any of your products do not comply, you should remove them from the AliExpress website or change the listing so that it can no longer be supplied to Australia. You should also consider initiating a recall. Failure to do so may result in compulsory recalls, legal action and/or significant penalties.

Where can suppliers find further product safety information?

The Product Safety Australia website contains detailed information about Australia's product safety system (www.productsafety.gov.au). There is also a dedicated resource, which the ACCC has developed for online sellers. Please use the resources available there to confirm that your product meets product safety laws. You can also subscribe on the website to receive product safety updates from the ACCC.

If you would like further information or clarification you can contact the ACCC directly via the Product Safety Australia website enquiry form.
